Environmental archeology plays a supporting and expanding role in field archeology, and mainly consists of archaeological surveys and investigations in coastal areas. It employs such means as experimental excavation and sample analysis to look into relations between environmental changes and economic and social activities in coastal areas in ancient times. As an important branch of archeology and an effective extension of field archeology, environmental archeology has been carried out in Xinjiang and other border areas and elsewhere in the country.
