To mark the arrival of the Lunar Year of the Horse, the National Museum of China inaugurated a major cultural showcase titled Galloping Forward: An Exhibition Celebrating the Year of the Horse on January 30, 2026. This festive debut was made possible through a high-level collaboration with several prestigious institutions, including the Gansu Provincial Museum, Gansu Bamboo Slips Museum, Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum Site Museum, the Shaanxi Academy of Archaeology, Qingzhou Museum, and Mianyang Museum.

The horse has been an indispensable partner to human progress, playing a foundational role in social development since its domestication. Historically, horses served as critical indicators of military strength and social hierarchy, while facilitating the flow of information and goods across the Silk Road. In China, the animal transcends its practical function as a symbol of emotional and spiritual resonance. Cultural motifs—ranging from the vigor of youth to the soaring vitality of the "dragon-horse spirit"—demonstrate the horse's deep roots in the Chinese psyche and its enduring influence on the nation's cultural identity.
120 pieces of exquisite artifacts are organized into five distinct thematic sections. These units recall the early history of horse domestication, the complex ritual systems of ancient chariots, the intricate craftsmanship of equestrian gear, and the horse's enduring influence on global trade. The final portion of the exhibition focuses on the "Divine Steed" as a recurring motif in artistic life, illustrating the animal's deep roots in the Chinese cultural identity.
In its official statement, the National Museum of China expresses the hope that the exhibition would inspire the public to embrace the new year with renewed vigor. By highlighting the horse's enduring legacy of speed and resilience, the museum aims to create a "bridge of dialogue" that connects ancient tradition with China's modern drive toward national rejuvenation. The exhibition is currently open to the public, offering a comprehensive look at the historical depth and contemporary value of the horse in Chinese civilization.
