The exhibition is organized into three sections: "Landscapes in Ink: A Mind Roaming the Vast," "Observing the Subtle: Empathy with the Living World," and "Echoes of Yesterday: Quiet Strokes, Profound Resonance". Framed around a poetic artistic experience that intertwines literature and visual art, the exhibition features 89 pieces (sets) of paintings created by Mr. Yung Liu across different stages of his artistic career, including various subjects such as landscapes, flowers and birds, and scenes of everyday life. Together, these works show the development of his artistic practice and distinctive stylistic qualities. In addition, the exhibition employs multimedia to reveal the stories and the artistic ingenuity behind the works. Through this immersive experience, audiences are invited to engage more deeply with the cultural meaning and artistic vitality embodied in the artworks.
Mr. Yung Liu is a world-renowned artist and bestselling author. In his early years, he devoted himself to the study of traditional Chinese painting, building a solid foundation in classical artistic techniques. He later drew upon the compositional logic and creative concepts of Western painting, and from the early 1970s began experimenting with his pioneering "spraying and rubbing technique", which integrates modern airbrush methods with traditional Chinese ink painting practices, giving rise to a highly distinctive aesthetic style.
In 2025, Mr. Yung Liu donated to the NMC two traditional Chinese paintings from his collection, Cloudy Mountains with Pines and Waterfalls and Wind Rising through the Ravine, as well as four works created using his self-developed spraying and rubbing technique: Dawn, Moon in the Water, Book Scroll, and Country. This exhibition features these four large-scale works, which are marked by a strong spirit of artistic experimentation and a distinctly modern sensibility.
