The Institute of Oil Painting Restoration is under the Cultural Relics Conservation Institution of the NMC, mainly responsible for regularly checking the oil painting storage to see whether the art works are affected by diseases; conserving and restoring the collected oil paintings; analyzing and studying the oil painting techniques and materials as well as the causes of diseases; researching and improving the oil painting restoration&conservation materials and restoration processes;developing the oil painting conservation and restoration plans; compiling files for the cultural relics, and carrying out exchanges and cooperation with the oil painting conservation and restoration departments of domestic famous museums and with relevant higher education institutions among other research institutes.

The NMC collects over 100 oil paintings which are large, feature a wide range of subjects and span a long time. To preserve and restore them is demanding as some of them require separate treatment. Since the establishment of the Institute of Oil Painting Restoration in 2018, we have been regularly checking the oil painting storage to see whether the art works are affected by diseases and have completed the conservation and restoration work of the painting Zhou Enlai by Situ Qiao.
