The flag raised by Mao Zedong at the Proclamation of the People’s Republic of China

At 3 pm on 1 October 1949, in front of a crowd of 300,000 soldiers and civilians in Tiananmen Square, there was a ceremony to celebrate the establishment of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Chairman Mao Zedong pressed a button, which caused the flag to rise on a flagpole in the north of the square, a symbol of the establishment of the PRC.
