The Institute for the Restoration of Artifacts was established in November 2018. Staffed by the personnel from the former Laboratory of the Artifact Technological Conservation and the Office of Objects Restoration, the Institute is responsible for the restoring and reproducing the cultural relics including ceramics, woodware, lacquerware and silk fabrics; conducting research on traditional restoration and reproduction processes & techniques, and materials improvement; presiding over or participating in the exchanges and cooperation on ancient artifact conservation and restoration at home and abroad; developing the plans for conservation and restoration of cultural relics including ceramics; and compiling the files about cultural relics.

The Institute for the Restoration of Artifacts has conducted conservation, restoration and reproduction of a large number of cultural relics, including restoration of the textiles in the NMC collection, restoration of the Guanyin Statues from the Dehua Kiln in the NMC collection, restoration of the Han Dynasty painted terracotta warriors and horses excavated from Yangjiawan in the NMC collection, restoration of painted pottery drums from a Majiayao Culture site in the NMC collection, restoration of the conical jade ornaments unearthed from Sanlihe in the NMC collection, restoration of the Tang tri-color pottery horse from the Exhibition of the “Splendor of the Tang Dynasty”, conservation of the jade ware unearthed from Dayangzhou Village, Xingan County, Jiangxi Province, restoration of clay figurines and woodcarving artifacts of Ganzhou, Jiangxi, and reproduction of the jade dragon artifacts from Hongshan Culture in the Neolithic Age. In addition,the Institute is responsible for handling the NMC artifacts affected by mold and diseases. It has taken measures to prevent bugs and mold forthe wholestorage at Xihuamen, and has completed fumigation and disinfection of the cultural relics in the African woodcarving storage, in the storage of diverse ethnic groups, and in the state gifts storage, and then conserved the fumigated artifacts in anaerobic packages.
