The 23rd Olympic Games were held in Los Angeles between 28 July and 12 August 1984 and China, for the first time since 1952, sent a team to compete. On the first day of competition on 29 July, Xi Haifeng (1957–), won the men’s 50-m pistol competition. This is the first gold medal of those games, but also represents China’s Olympic medal ‘breakthrough’. In these Olympic Games, China won a total of 15 gold medals, eight silver and nine bronze medals, coming fourth in the medal table. (Ji, Ruxun)
