Qianhua reign period, 1st year (911), Ten Kingdoms, Chu
Diameter 4.3 cm, Weight 36.6 g
This is a thick coin with a blank reverse and an inscription around the hole on the obverse. The gold-plated coin was minted in 911 to commemorate the promotion of Wu Yin, King of Chu, to Supreme Commander of Tiance (Tiance fubao) by Emperor Tazu of the Later Liang. The mint at Tiance produced both copper and iron coins, which were thick and heavy with dignified and beautiful characters. However, it had very limited capacity and gold-plated copper coins such as this are rare, although many lead coins have survived. (Wang Yuanxue)
