This waist warrant, made of copper, was a certificate for crossing a checkpoint. It bears the name of the bearer and could be fastened to his girdle for guards at checkpoints to identify him as a messenger. The Tangut people were horsemen who lived mainly on herding and hunting. As they were at war constantly with the Song and Liao, they depended entirely on horse-riding messengers to deliver documents and pass on orders.
