On 19 January 1946, the International Military Tribunal of the Far East was established by General MacArthur, the Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers, to try the leaders of the Empire of Japan for war crimes. The judges were chosen by MacArthur from among candidates nominated by the Allied Powers. The trials were held in Tokyo, with the prosecution starting on 3 May 1946, and continued until 12 November 1948. The 1,781-page judgment was drafted by the judges from seven countries and included sections totaling 300 pages relevant to China drafted by Mei Ju-ao and his aides providing strong evidence. Mei Ju-ao took this part of the judgment to Hong Kong in June 1949 and handed it over to the collection of the calligrapher Liu Yong’an.
